Basic Facts Quizzes Every Friday

September 3, 2008

Dear Parents of Room 203,

Wow!  You have received a lot of information in the past two days and I apologize for sending home yet another note.  However, we are diving into our math curriculum and I wanted to keep you posted on one of the key elements:  Basic Facts!

Students in fourth grade are expected to quickly recall basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts.  Over the next several weeks, there will be weekly quizzes of addition and subtraction facts to monitor your child’s progress.  Students will have 2 minutes to complete 52 problems (eg. 4 +5 = ___, 17 – 9 = ___).  Students will record weekly results on a line graph to monitor independent progress.  When a student scores a 48 or higher, he/she will no longer need take the weekly quiz.  These quizzes will not receive a letter grade; however, studying the facts should be taken seriously as it will directly impact your child’s performance in the units we study this year.

We will begin with addition and subtraction and then move into multiplication and division in mid October.

Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Ms. Finke
